Description
Austin Hamilton Pool - Hamilton Pool is a natural swimming hole located just outside Austin Texas, that is part of the Balconies Canyon land preserve. This Texas hill country jewel is a favorite spot for cooling off in the summer time and to enjoy the nature that surronds it. This was an underground river that collapsed and created this grotto or cave over a thousand years ago and expose the cave and swimming hole. The hamilton creeks spills water over a 50 ft waterfall into the swimming hole below and is enjoy by many who visit the preserve. Always check a head before driving out because it is closed for swimming when the bacterial count goes up mostly after heavy rains. This is located just outside of Austin Texas in the Texas Hill country. It can be a slightly difficult walk to get to the pool area as it is rather a steep climb in and out with some rough trail areas for those with bad knees. This is a spring fed pool from the underground river below which flows into hamilton creek and into the pedernales river. Update...After a hard freeze several years ago they have had to close the cave area to visitors because of danger of collapse. It seems part of the inside area of the cave are showing signs they might collapse with falling rocks on a regular basis so no one is allowed in this part for now you can still use the trails or the pool outside the grotto.. I do not expect to see it reopen. You can still swim in the part of the pool that is outside the grotto area.

Tod and Cynthia, I love your Texas images. I've studied the history of Texas from the time of the Comanche.
